Addition Games

We have been working very hard during math time to master addition with numbers 1-10. Here are a few games you could do at home to practice adding in a fun way!

1. Dice
Roll two dice. Then add the two numbers together.
2. Dominoes
Choose a domino. Then add both sides of the domino together to to find the sum.
3. Cards
Flip over two cards. Add the two cards together

We are also learning about turn around facts. Your child can write a turn around fact for any number sentence they write.

2+3=5 is the same as 3+2=5

Spelling

Spelling Notes:
      ·       Students will be having spelling tests every Friday.

·       The spelling words will be assessed and sight words will be bonus.

·       Spelling words will be glued into the planner each week. I will also try to post them on the website.

·       Spelling words are chosen based on the sounds that the students are working on in whole group phonics and their small group with Ms. Richards.

·       While the kids will have practice with the words at school, in order to be successful on the weekly spelling test, I recommend they practice each night.

·       There is no required spelling homework to turn in.

·        A menu of options or choices is on the back of this page.  Use this for ideas to practice spelling words this year. I suggest that you hang it on the refrigerator or in your child’s homework area. Then they can check it to make a choice each night.

·       I would suggest they take a practice test on Thursday to make sure they are prepared for Friday.

·       Students need to write neatly. If a word cannot be read it will be marked wrong.

·       The words will not be read in order. They will be mixed up each week, so you should practice them out of order too.

Spelling Menu:
Refer to this throughout the school year to practice spelling words.

Homework

Homework Note

·        This week we will begin homework!

·        Each week, the homework packet will have a front cover page with weekly notes.

·        Each week your child will bring home a packet on Monday. It should be completed and returned on Friday.

·        I send the homework in a packet to accommodate your busy schedules. This way if there is a night your child will not be able to do homework you can catch up or get ahead. Please encourage your child to do one page per night. I do NOT recommend doing it all in one setting.

·        The night it should be completed is written on the bottom of each page. Please try to complete it on the night I recommend because it will cover what we learned in class that week.

·        Each night, your child will have one page of math work. Occasionally there will also be a page of reading or grammar to review skills we are learning in class.

·        Next week we will begin book buddy. More to come on that later! J

Schedule

Here is a more formal class schedule. We will try to stick to this every day. Try to take our class schedule into account when you are scheduling appointments etc. for your child.

7:45-9:15 Small Reading Groups
9:15-10:45 Phonics, Whole Group Reading, Writing, Grammar
10:45-11:40 Specials
11:50-12:15 Lunch
12:15-12:30 Recess
12:30-1:00 Calendar
1:00-2:00 Math
2:00-2:20 Fluency and Word Wall
2:20-2:35 Pack Up

** In first grade, we only have an assistant for small reading groups. Our time slot with Ms. Richards is from 7:45-9:15. In order to get in all of the groups we will really need to start between 7:45-7:50. Please try to have your child to school on time each day. This way they can get unpacked, work on morning work, and get settled. If they need to eat breakfast they should come early so they do not have to eat in the classroom and miss out on small groups. **

What's The Buzz

Behavior and Bees :)

Behavior:

·        This week we are beginning to move bees in our classroom as a result of not following school and classroom rules and expectations.

·        Your child receives 2 warnings before they have to move their bee.

·        Please expect the first week or so to be an adjustment as your child gets used to the expectations in our class.

·        I would appreciate it if you would discuss your expectations for your child’s behavior at school with them.

·        I am VERY excited for a wonderful year with lots of learning!

Orientation

Sandersville's Primary Orientation night will be:

Thursday August 8th at 6:00

I hope that you will be able to come to see the classroom, meet some of your classmates, and of course meet me! There will also be some important paperwork that needs to be filled out prior to the first day of school.

If you are able to bring school supplies with you to orientation night, it would be great! This way I will be able to get them put away, and the first day of school won't be quite so hectic!

Hope to see you there!

If for some reason, you are unable to attend, please send me an email so we can make a plan to meet and get all of the information completed before the first day of school.

All About Me

Hi! My name is Ms. Hylen! I am so excited to be your first grade teacher this year!

I hope you have had a great, fun filled summer. Mine has been great. I have spent many days relaxing and reading by the pool. Also, I have enjoyed having lots of extra time to spend with my family and friends. I took a trip to Destin this summer with my family. It is my favorite place to go visit. There are lots of fun things to do, places to go shopping, and good food to eat! I also got to take a long weekend to trip to the big city of Chicago.

I am sure you want to know a little bit about me!  This will be my fifth year teaching first grade at Sandersville. I graduated from the University of Kentucky with my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education in May of 2009, after student teaching at Sandersville with Mrs. Atkins. I have spent so many great years at Sandersville it truly feel like it is my home!  I completed  Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership Specializing in Reading and Writing at Georgetown College in spring of 2013. I will take one more class this fall to be certified as a reading specialist.  When I have free time I love to spend time with friends, go to the movies, do a little shopping, and go out to eat. I also love to make crafts and try to keep up with my scrap book. I love to read, especially by the pool!

I am looking forward to a great new school year with a great new bunch of kids! I look forward to meeting each of you on orientation night and the first day of school. We have so much to learn during first grade and it will a great ride! By the end of the year we will all be great little readers and mathematicians. I can't wait to get started! See you soon!
